Federal and state leadership converged in Lafayette County last Friday, April 24, as U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Brooke Rollins and Missouri Governor Mike Kehoe visited GR Farms, owned by FCS members Garrett and Cara Riekhof, for a strategic roundtable and press briefing.
The event offered a unique platform for member-owners and industry leaders to discuss the economic landscape of rural Missouri and the future of domestic agricultural production.
Engaging Local Leadership
The roundtable featured a diverse group of stakeholders, including representatives from the Missouri Soybean Association, Missouri Corn Growers Association, Missouri Farm Bureau, and the Missouri Cattlemen’s Association.
The discussion focused on practical challenges facing the industry, ranging from input costs to the importance of trade infrastructure for Missouri-grown commodities.
Key Policy Announcements
Following the roundtable, Secretary Rollins held a press conference to detail several USDA initiatives designed to support stability in the farm economy:
- Disaster Assistance Payments: The Secretary announced a second round of payments through the Supplemental Disaster Relief Program (SDRP). These funds are designated for producers who experienced losses due to natural disasters, specifically drought, in 2023 and 2024.
- Domestic Nitrogen Initiative: Rollins outlined plans to bolster domestic nitrogen production. The initiative aims to lower long-term fertilizer costs by reducing reliance on foreign energy and chemical imports from countries like Russia and China.
- Market Access: The USDA reaffirmed its focus on securing expanded trade deals for renewable fuels, specifically BioDiesel and Ethanol, to strengthen domestic demand.
Strengthening the Rural Economy
For the Higginsville community and FCS Financial member-owners, the presence of both federal and state executives underscored the regional importance of the agricultural sector. Governor Kehoe joined Secretary Rollins in emphasizing the administration's commitment to protecting property rights and lowering the cost of doing business for Missouri farm families.
The visit concluded with a demonstration of local operations at the GR Farms, highlighting the innovation and resilience that define our agricultural communities.
