Statistically, only about one in three family farm operations successfully transition to the next generation as a thriving business. With 38% of agricultural producers now 65 or older, rural communities are approaching a critical transition point over the next decade. To help producers navigate these complex dynamics, FCS Financial recently hosted University of Missouri Extension Agribusiness Specialist Wesley Tucker for a live Grow Together Webinar, titled "The Farm Legacy Roadmap."

Core Concepts & Key Takeaways from the Session

1. Estate Planning vs. Succession Planning

An estate plan determines how physical assets (land, machinery, livestock) are distributed upon death. A succession plan goes much further—it outlines the gradual, structured transfer of management, operational leadership, and business continuity while you are living.

2. Avoiding "Bucket Spillage"

Carrying all farm assets in a single bucket until death risks accidental "spillage" through long-term healthcare expenses, unexpected taxes, divorce, or family conflicts. A succession roadmap transfers management in phases, protecting assets while giving the next generation a clear, accountable path to ownership.

3. Intentional Communication

Family business roles inherently create friction. Dedicated family business meetings act as the essential lubricant to align long-term expectations, address sweat equity, and thoughtfully navigate the balance of fairness between farming and non-farming siblings.

4. Building a Long Runway

Waiting until a medical crisis or funeral to address succession creates a sudden, high-risk transition for the farm. Starting early provides a longer "runway" for younger producers to gain financial decision-making experience and leadership confidence.
