Spring is here and that means tractors and farm equipment will be moving on the roads more frequently. These vehicles are big and move slowly. Here are some tips drivers can take when sharing the road with farm equipment.
- Maintain a safe distance from large equipment and slow-moving vehicles.
- Be patient when passing and don’t pass in a “no passing zone,” no matter how late you are running.
- Always yield the right of way to farm equipment.
- Watch for turn signals. Older equipment may not have flashing lights as a car does, watch for hand signals from the operator.
- Stay alert and follow all the traffic laws.
- Avoid distractions and the urge to check notifications while sharing the road with farm equipment.
The Show-Me Farm Safety organization has seven highway safety tips for farmers.
- Make sure the lights are legal and working.
- Use hazard lights and slow-moving vehicle emblems.
- Take caution while driving machinery across or onto a main highway.
- Provide a follow car with flashing lights.
- Pay attention to attachments.
- If traffic backs up, pull over.
- Limit movements of equipment during evening or peak traffic hours.
We hope everyone has a safe and productive spring planting season.
