FCS Financial Agrisafe Nurse Scholarships

FCS Financial has awarded three scholarships to rural Missouri nurses to complete the Agrisafe Nurse Scholar education series. Carla Barber, Nursing Administration, at Perry County Memorial Hospital in Perryville, Jena Eads, RN, at Wright Memorial Hospital in Trenton and Katie Krohn, Quality Management Lead, at Regional Medical Center in Kirksville will complete 18 hours of continuing education specifically focused on the unique risks facing farmers and farm workers.

Agriculture is a diverse industry usually located in some of the more remote parts of the country. The risks and occupational exposures associated with farming and ranching are often not familiar to healthcare workers serving rural communities where nurses are commonly the frontline provider.

“Before moving to Kirksville I had been a nurse in Massachusetts, Denver and Salt Lake City,” Krohn says. “Working in a small community hospital is certainly different than working in a metropolitan area, and I felt compelled to make as many efforts as possible to adapt to my new community. “

The Agrisafe Nurse Scholar program was developed to help rural nurses be better prepared to prevent, identify and treat diseases and conditions that commonly impact farmers and ranchers. The program covers a range of topics from zoonotic diseases, chemical exposure and hearing conservation to respiratory health, skin diseases and mental health.

“When I found the Nurse Scholar program, I knew it was meant for me,” Eads says. “I am passionate about agriculture and nursing, and I wanted to be able to share that with others.”

The Nurse Scholar program was developed by the non-profit organization Agrisafe Network that represents health professionals and educators working to reduce health disparities found among those in the agriculture community.

“I am honored to be chosen as a recipient of an Agrisafe Nurse Scholar scholarship. I look forward to furthering my education on agricultural health and safety topics to benefit our rural Perry County farming community,” Barber says. “My goal is to use the knowledge from the Agrisafe Nurse Scholar program to promote health and safety as well as reduce health disparities among our agricultural community through my role at Perry County Memorial Hospital.”

“Teaming up with AgriSafe to provide this educational opportunity will undoubtedly make a difference in rural Missouri by improving health and disease awareness and prevention,” David Janish, FCS Financial CEO, says. “As a member-owned cooperative serving rural communities, FCS Financial is proud to be able to offer this program to these nurses at no cost to them or their employers.”
